Salt Of the Earth

Salt of the Earth (1954) is an American drama film written by Michael Wilson, directed by Herbert J. Biberman, and produced by Paul Jarrico. All had been blacklisted by the Hollywood establishment due to their involvement in socialist politics.[1]

The movie became a historical phenomenon and has a cult following due to how the United States establishment (politicians, journalists, studio executives, and other trade unions) dealt with the film. Salt of the Earth is one of the first pictures to advance the feminist social and political point-of-view.

In 1950–1951, in the fictional village of Zinc Town, New Mexico, the drama tells the story of a long and difficult strike led by Mexican-American and Anglo miners against the Empire Zinc Company. The film shows how the miners (the union men and their wives), the company, and the police, react during the strike. In neorealist style the producers and director used actual miners and their families as actors in the film.

Starbucks Goes Union in Minnesota

Twin Cities, MN- Baristas at the Mall of America Starbucks walked off the café floor today and delivered a demand letter to management calling for just treatment of all employees affected by Starbucks’ closure of stores nationwide. The surprise job action comes in the wake of the coffee giant’s announcement that it will close 600 stores, including 27 in Minnesota.

The baristas demanded an option to transfer to other stores and a fair severance package for affected workers. Starbucks reportedly plans to give workers just one month notice before laying them off with a paltry two weeks’ pay The company will insist that some baristas transfer and will revoke severance pay if transfer offers are refused.

The protesting baristas are members of the Starbucks Workers Union, which is a campaign of the Industrial Workers of the World labor union. Starbucks previously backtracked on its refusal to disclose which locations would be shuttered after the union and others condemned the company for leaving workers in a nerve-wracking limbo.

The store action makes the Mall of America location the first Starbucks in Minnesota, and the first store in the Mall of America, to have a public union presence.

Erik Forman, a barista at the store recently fired for union activity, said, “With the skyrocketing cost of living, workers have no other choice than to stand up for improvements on the job. The alternative is a continued decline into poverty and a degraded quality of life for working families. But this doesn’t have to happen. Our message is hope- even at Starbucks in the Mall of America, we can organize and fight!”

While portraying itself as a ‘socially-responsible’ employer, Starbucks pays baristas a poverty wage of $7.60/hr. In addition, all retail hourly workers at Starbucks in the United States are part-time employees with no guaranteed number of work hours per week. According to Starbucks figures released to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 40.9% of its employees (including managers) are covered by the company health care package, a lower percentage than the oft-criticized Wal-Mart, which insures 47% of its workforce.

Since the launch of the IWW campaign at Starbucks on May 17, 2004, the company has been cited multiple times for illegal union-busting by the National Labor Relations Board. The company settled two complaints against it and is awaiting a decision by a judge in New York on more than 30 additional rights’ violations. Starbucks’ large anti-union operation is operated in conjunction with the Akin Gump law firm and the Edelman public relations firm.

The IWW Starbucks Workers Union is a grassroots organization of over 200 current and former employees at the world's largest coffee chain united for secure work hours and a living wage. The union has members throughout the United States fighting for systemic change at the company and remedying individual grievances with management. The SWU has been especially active in New York City, Chicago, and Grand Rapids.

Union baristas, bussers, and shift supervisors have fought successfully toward improved scheduling and staffing levels, increased wages, and workplace safety. Workers who join the union have immediate access to co-workers and members of the community who will struggle with them for a better life on the job.

Siete Nueve-Trabuco

Found out about Siete Nueve from PR Terrorist on the SOHH forums a couple years ago (r.i.p.). Stumbled upon this album (which is made to look like a vinyl record and won't play in my damn computer) at a store in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico's Plaza Las Américas. Political Puerto Rican hip-hop in spanish over jazzy/salsa beats.

F-Minus - Wake Up Screaming

F-MINUS started in 1995 with Brad logan, Jen Johnson, Timmy Chunks and Awol. Not much happened until Sarah Lee replaced Timmy Chunks on guitar and named the band in 1996. As for the rest of 1996, it was still a slow start, due to Brad and Awol being gone most of the year, touring with the bands they worked with. They played a few shows here and there.

Then, in 1997, they finally started getting their shit together, well, a little bit more anyway. They started playing more shows and recorded a few compilation tracks. At that point, they figured it would be cool to start working on some stuff that they would actually put out. Chris Lagerborg (R.I.P) replaced Awol on drums and they released their first two 7”s “Failed Society” on Hellcat Records and “Won’t Bleed Me” on Pelado Records.

With Adam Zuckert taking over drum duties and Erica Daking replacing Sarah Lee on guitar, the rest of 1998 they worked on what would become their first full length, “F-Minus-F-Minus F-Minus”, or simply known as their s/t album.

Then Brad, Jen, Erica and yes, yet another new drummer, John Guerra, spent the rest of 1999 and 2000 touring the U.S. and Europe.

With the end of 2000 approaching and Brad and Erica now living in New York, they once again brought Adam Zuckert’s drum skills back on board to write and record the second record, “Suburban Blight”.

Choking Victim-Crack Rock Steady Demo

Choking Victim was an influential ska punk/hardcore punk (what they call “crack rock steady,” a slight satire on rocksteady) band from New York City in the 1990s.

The band became hometown (C-squat in the Lower East Side of Manhattan where they squatted and frequently continue to inhabit and organize shows) legends for their innovative music and highly political, often Anarcho-Communistic lyrics. At the same time they also became infamous for their Satanic imagery and numerous references to the vagrant lifestyle such as crack-smoking, shoplifting, and squatting. They also, like many other bands in the punk scene, have strong anti-police sentiments in their songs. The band prides itself on its Atheism, often making sardonic references to Satan, for the sole purpose of being offensive, rather than any sort of actual worship of the alleged deity. Stza, in fact, was quoted in a rare interview as saying that the sole reason the band included Satan as a graphic reference in so many songs was for its direct opposition to the typical Christian status quo.

Choking Victim broke up after the first day of recording for their one and only album, but the recordings from that one day were enough to make a solid album. After they broke up, Stza and Ezra Crack formed the band Leftöver Crack, and Skwert and Ezra formed INDK.

Anarchist group meets in Waldo woods

Waldo - Some 150 anarchists from throughout the United States and Canada descended on a strip of private land this week in this Sheboygan County village for four days of workshops, including some focused on strategizing for demonstrations at the upcoming Democratic and Republican national conventions.

The 2008 CrimethInc. Convergence was the sixth annual communal campout organized by CrimethInc. Ex-Workers' Collective, an international underground network that since the mid-1990s has published widely read anarchist texts such as "Recipes for Disaster: An Anarchist Cookbook."


The group also has drawn the attention of FBI agents trying to infiltrate the protest movement. At the 2004 CrimethInc. gathering in Iowa, an undercover FBI operative met Eric McDavid, a California man who was found guilty last year of conspiring to burn or blow up a federal facility.

CrimethInc. texts eschew government, capitalism and conformity. The collective has no members and no leader. But the convergence had plenty of policy and procedure. Decisions are made by consensus, and there are no drugs, drinking, photography or exchange of money allowed. And definitely no police or corporate media.

"The locals are welcome," media liaison and local circus performer Pinkerton Xyloma said. "We have a no-media policy because the media are not considered individuals. It is a concern that people from the media will not respect people's consent or consensus."

Xyloma would not say why the group was gathered in Wisconsin or what participants were discussing. He said they had no interest in violence or terrorism.

On its Web site, CrimethInc. describes itself as a place where "the secret worlds of shoplifters, rioters, dropouts, deserters, adulterers, vandals, daydreamers . . . converge to form gateways to new worlds where theft, cheating, warfare, boredom, and so on are simply obsolete."

The collective publicized the event on its Web site and at anarchist social centers around the country - places such as Cream City Collectives in Milwaukee's Riverwest neighborhood, which had fliers for the gathering posted on the door and closed shop on the day it began.
Gathering at Gordon Park

Participants met up between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Wednesday at Gordon Park in Riverwest, where they picked up pamphlets, got directions to the campground in Waldo or hitched rides with fellow campers. Mostly young, they arrived on bikes, on foot and by car, some lugging packs with tents and camping supplies and others with nothing but a notebook.

Some were tattooed and pierced; some brought their dogs; a few brought young children. One brought a jar of omega-3 fortified peanut butter. People who recognized each other from past convergences embraced.

They traveled about 45 miles north into Waldo, along the village's main street, down a gravel road bordered by shoulder-high wildflowers and grasses.

There, on privately owned land, campers pitched about 75 tents and hung laundry from clotheslines. They built campfires, played board games or lined up for free food at a tent marked "Kitchen."

The focus of the 2008 convergence was on strategizing for action at the national conventions and "longer-range anarchist endeavors," according to the Web site. Among the presenters: The RNC Welcoming Committee, an anarchist group preparing to disrupt the 2008 Republican National Convention in Minnesota.

Participants were also encouraged to come prepared to lead their own workshops. "Projectiles 101" promised to teach anarchists how to build things such as confetti cannons and slings. "Guy-necology" focused on sexual issues for men, such as their role in birth control and acceptable flirtation.
'No disturbance' so far

Meanwhile, residents of Waldo, population 485, weren't sure what to make of the anarchists in the woods. Some had assumed the campers were part of a religious retreat or were in town for a nearby vintage auto show.

Waldo Village President Mike Hintz said he didn't know anything about the convergence until he happened to see the campsite Wednesday night when he was driving by. He didn't go into the site, though, because a neighbor told him the group had been behaving themselves.

"I don't know what they're doing back there, but it seemed so far there's no disturbance," Hintz said.

2008 CrimethInc. Convergence Looms

To attend this summer’s CrimethInc. convergence, show up July 16 at Gordon Park (Locust St. & Humboldt Blvd) in Milwaukee, WI. You can also show up July 17, but you’ll miss some of the events.

The CrimethInc. convergence is a self-organized gathering to circulate skills, deepen networks, and build morale in North America in order to foster a culture of resistance worldwide. Everyone who comes is encouraged to be a presenter and performer. This year’s convergence will focus on developing direct action skills such as might be useful at the Democratic and Republican National Conventions this summer, and also on creative pastimes, subversive ideas, and survival strategies that have nothing to do with them. Anarchists from overseas will also be present to offer perspectives from other contexts.

Like previous convergences, this one will be a sober, consent-based, anticapitalist space. That means no drugs or drinking on the premises; accountability processes will be in effect according to the wishes of survivors; and that camping, eating, literature, and everything else are totally free (though participants are discouraged from selling things except to raise funds for political prisoners). We’ll have more details on the policies stipulated by the local organizers shortly.

Bring camping gear, food, arts and crafts materials, literature to share, plays to perform, workshops to present, songs to sing, poetry to recite, stunts to pull off, plans to whisper, and the sort of wild-eyed romantic idealism that can make the most boring situation into a crazy adventure.

Childcare, medical services, and conflict mediation will all be provided.
