Police investigating vandalism at Boston Herald

Police are trying to find out who slashed conveyor belts and cut wires on sorting machines at the Boston Herald.

A manager at the daily newspaper discovered the vandalism at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. The machines had last been inspected at about 3:30 p.m.

A police report said 15 conveyor belts and six sorting machines were damaged. No security cameras were filming the vandalized area.

The newspaper notified police at about 12:19 a.m. Wednesday.

A spokesman for the Herald declined comment on the incident. A message for comment on whether the vandalism affected the printing of Wednesday's editions was not immediately returned.

In June, the Herald announced plans to lay off 130 to 160 workers and outsource its printing operations
