Stand-off at Greek Embassy

Up to 40 masked protesters attempted to storm the Greek Embassy in Holland Park this morning, clashing with police, setting alight the national flag and demanding an audience with the ambassador.

Police contained the demonstration outside number 1 Holland Park by the afternoon, while negotiators from the Embassy made an offer to allow a handful of protesters into the building for talks with the Greek officials.

The protesters are believed to be Greek students acting in support of rioters in their homeland who took to the streets, hurling stones and petrol bombs over the weekend after a 15-year-old boy was shot dead by police in Athens.

An embassy spokeswoman said: "They have been very aggressive and attempted to storm the building this morning. They brought the flag down and burnt it... for now they seem a little quiet, but we don't know what will happen next."

A Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed the incident was taking place. "We have an appropriate response in place", he added.
